The Kingston Freeport Terminal is committed to operate in a socially responsible manner that respects the environment, health, and the human rights of its workforce, customers and the surrounding communities.

KFTL views social responsibility as a key aspect of its operations and will not compromise the environment, health, safety or values for profit or production.

Additionally, KFTL is devoted to the development of surrounding communities, and particularly those whose economic livelihood is based on fishing.  To this end the company has dedicated itself to contributing to the improvement of the quality of the Kingston harbour and views itself as the driver of the rejuvenation of this important Jamaican landmark.

KFTL recognizes the importance of both its internal and external stakeholders, including its staff, contractors, surrounding businesses and local fishing communities. The company understands that it cannot operate independently of them and has developed a robust plan that speaks to their engagement. For the fishing communities, in particular, KFTL engages in close communication and interaction. The vision is to forge long-term relationships as well as to help them to understand and be key participants in the role that KFTL is dedicated to playing in their development.

As a part of the CMA CGM group of companies, KFTL’s guiding principles place the protection of its operational and extended environment at the heart of its sustainability policy. To this end, our management will ensure that growth of the company’s revenue streams, will be pursued through the implementation of its Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) across all departments. This system is affected by the operationalizing of 14 Management Plans and 8 Environmental Permits.

More specifically KFTL undertakes to set specific measurable achievable realistic and time-bound objectives to ensure full compliance with local environment laws and international policies. KFTL will, therefore, ensure throughout its operational activities, that all forms of pollution will be prevented and mitigated where possible, to ensure sustainability of surrounding ecosystems and their biodiversity. The company also commits to a process of continual review and enhancements of these targets and objectives to ensure a safe and healthy environment for our customers and staff.

As part of the environmental and social safeguards plans, KFTL has developed a Fishing Community Development Plan to provide potential economic and social opportunities for fishing communities and to improve the living and working conditions of fishing communities that may possibly be impacted by any unforeseen project activities.

Community Development projects will be implemented across the various fishing beaches surrounding the Kingston Harbour and their surrounding communities with a view to enhancing quality of life for all.

KFTL is committed to playing a lead role in the long-term development and restoration of fish biomass in the Kingston Harbour, the shipping industry and logistics in Jamaica.

The need to control and mitigate any negative impact on the environment as a result of its operations is an important consideration to KFTL and is demonstrated in the steps taken to manage the terminal’s environmental footprint. As a signal of this focus KFTL has worked, and continues to work, with local Jamaican environmental organizations and regulators, as well as a number of international environment management organizations associated with the IDB and other lending agencies.

The organization has developed an extensive and detailed plan which was approved by Jamaica’s National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), to guide its activities and the dredging process. An important aspect of this plan focuses on the protection of the interest of fisher folks whose livelihood could be impacted by the dredging activities.

The organization has initiated contact with all the stakeholders who could be so impacted and has been working closely with them to implement preventative measures and to make compensation, if necessary. KFTL is committed to transparency and to the use of best practices in protecting the environment and the interest of all relevant stakeholders in this process.
